PEM/SPE electrolysis converts purified water and electricity into hydrogen and oxygen on opposite sides of a solid polymer membrane. For a hydrogen inhalation machine buyer, the important questions are not only “Does it use PEM?” but also how water quality, gas separation, output verification, temperature control and maintenance are managed.
SPE and PEM describe the same core platform from different angles
SPE means solid polymer electrolyte, emphasising the solid ion-conducting electrolyte. PEM means proton exchange membrane, emphasising the membrane that transports protons. In this equipment category, the terms usually describe the same family of membrane-electrolysis architecture rather than competing processes.
The electrolysis process step by step
- Water reaches the anode side. The approved purified or distilled water provides the feedstock.
- Oxygen forms at the anode. Water is oxidised, releasing oxygen, protons and electrons.
- Protons cross the membrane. The membrane conducts H+ while helping keep the generated gas streams physically separated.
- Electrons travel through the external circuit. At the cathode, electrons combine with protons.
- Hydrogen forms at the cathode. The hydrogen stream then passes through the machine’s gas-management path.
The half-reactions are commonly written as 2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e− at the anode and 4H+ + 4e− → 2H2 at the cathode. A U.S. Department of Energy PEM electrolysis technical report illustrates this separated anode/cathode process.
Why feed-water quality matters
Minerals and dissolved contaminants can increase conductivity in unintended parts of the system, deposit on wetted components and shorten stack life. Use only the water type stated in the current manual. “No added alkaline electrolyte” does not mean that tap water is acceptable or that the machine is maintenance-free.
Engineering blocks buyers should inspect
| System block | Purpose | Buyer verification |
|---|---|---|
| PEM/SPE stack | Electrochemical gas generation and separation. | Model, rated output, duty conditions and supplier documentation. |
| Water reservoir/monitoring | Maintains approved feed water and operating level. | Water type, low-water response, filling and cleaning procedure. |
| Gas-water separation | Reduces entrained liquid before delivery. | Drainage, separator maintenance and humidifier arrangement. |
| Temperature management | Keeps operation within designed limits. | Temperature display/alarm and shutdown logic. |
| Outlet and tubing | Delivers the specified gas stream. | Materials, connectors, approved accessories and cleaning. |
| Flow verification | Confirms machine output under defined conditions. | Whether rating refers to hydrogen only or total mixed gas, tolerance and method. |
From pure-hydrogen machines to hydrogen-oxygen systems
The H300 300 mL/min and H600 600 mL/min are pure-hydrogen product lines. The HO1000 and HO1000L are hydrogen-oxygen systems with 1,000 mL/min total catalogue output in a 2:1 H2/O2 ratio. These numbers describe equipment configuration; they are not a medical dose or proof that one flow rate is better for every user.
Safety remains part of the technology
Hydrogen becomes flammable in air at sufficiently high concentrations. Reviews and human studies emphasise controlled delivery and continued safety research. An early healthy-adult safety study of 2.4% hydrogen in air was small and does not validate every machine, concentration or use scenario. Follow the model manual, keep away from flames and sparks, ventilate the operating area and do not modify tubing or outlets.
Frequently asked questions
Are SPE and PEM two competing technologies?
Usually not in this context. SPE emphasises the solid electrolyte and PEM the proton-conducting membrane within the same general architecture.
Why not use alkaline chemicals?
PEM/SPE systems can operate with approved pure water without adding liquid alkaline electrolyte. This does not remove the need for water-quality control and maintenance.
Does PEM automatically guarantee 99.99% hydrogen?
No. Purity is a model-specific performance claim that requires a defined measurement, operating condition and quality record.
